What did Jesus say?
Take Up My Yoke
- Matthew 11:28-30 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
In Other Text:
- Isaiah 40:28-29 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.
- 1 Peter 5:6-7 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Challenge:
A friend and I recently moved her daughter from one dorm room to another. We’re still laughing about our humbling experience of relocating her mini refrigerator. Each of us attempted to lift and carry the awkward-sized load on our own, with dismal results. We just couldn’t carry it alone. It took both of us to lift the load and successfully move it to the correct location.
Our journey with Jesus is no different. Life throws us heavy things to carry: broken hearts, shattered dreams, unimaginable losses, and more. But carrying our grief and loss alone will always leave us more weary than we can express. That’s when Jesus says, “I’m here. Let me carry this burden with you, as you lean under my gentle yoke, so I can lead you to the place of peace and rest you’re looking for.”
What burdens are you attempting to carry alone? Jesus stands ready to love you, lead you, and strengthen you, if you will place your burdens on His Almighty shoulders today.
