What did Jesus say?
Honor Your Parents
- Matthew 15:4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’
In Other Text:
- Deuteronomy 5:16 Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
- 1 Timothy 5:4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.
Challenge:
Our Father loves His creation so much, He gave up His own Son so that we might have an eternal relationship with Him. As those made in His image, He calls us to the same committed, sacrificial love for our earthly families.
As today’s social norms continue their downward spiral into ungodliness, the practice of honoring and caring for our parents is becoming a lost art. TV shows, movies, and memes regularly poke fun at our parents being out of touch with the latest lingo or newest technology.
While the world may devalue family relationships, the Word tells us to put our religion into practice by caring for our own families (1 Tim 5:4). The Lord is pleased and honored when we love our family well. Jesus’ example shows us that love is often accompanied by laying down our own desires and convenience for the sake of serving others. Consider how you might show honor and love this week to those you call “parents”, whether the role is biological or spiritual in nature. Might you be willing to adjust your agendas in order to create margin to love them well?
