Week 1 Challenge: Love Them Where They Are

What did Jesus say?

Love One Another

  • John 13:34-35 – A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

In Other Text:

  • 1 John 4:7-10 – 7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
  • Leviticus 19:18 – You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.

Challenge:

The challenge here is really… loving the way Jesus does. This requires a different approach in how we live and interact with others. Consider this; Jesus was confident in who He was and why He was here. He was interested in meeting people where they were, right in the middle of their mess (e.g. the woman caught in adultery – John 8:1-11). He loved her right where she was, not where she should be. He offered her dignity and respect.

So, it requires us to make an effort to love people where they are, and for who they are. From there, offer dignity and respect to them. As you pray for them, watch what the Holy Spirit can do with that investment in their life.
